Spanning the Gap Between Judges and Journalists

The chasm between judges and journalists, therefore, will not and should not disappear, but perhaps with some better communication, a little footbridge will span the gap every now and then. Story by Juliet A. Terry Email | Bio The West Virginia Judicial Conference was in Wheeling earlier this month, and organizers brought in the Reynolds National Center for Courts and Media to conduct a one-day workshop for judges and journalists. The event was designed to help each side do its job better, but it turned into an illuminating, almost emotionally exhausting day that felt like an eight-hour session with Dr. Phil McGraw. Judges and journalists rarely, if ever, get to speak candidly with one another. But candor, plus a little rancor and a fair amount of humor, were the orders of the day Oct....

Bill on judges'' accountability to be introduced
Posted Sunday, October 22, 2006 10:45:36 PM by Blog57 Team
A bill aimed at ensuring the accountability of judges is expected to be introduced in Parliament during the winter session beginning next month. The Judges (Inquiry) Bill provides for setting up a National Judicial Council (NJC) to probe any misconduct by a judge of the Supreme Court or High Courts. The proposed law, which entails certain amendments to the Judges (Inquiry) Act of 1968, provides for a procedure under which any person can make a complaint to the NJC against judges except the Chief Justice of India (CJI). The NJC will comprise the CJI, two senior-most judges of the apex court and two senior-most chief justices of the High Courts nominated by the CJI. The bill provides for inquiries by the NJC in cases of complaints against a judicial officer, official sources said. The bill was proposed to be introduced in Parliament in last year's winter session but this could not be done due to differing views in the judiciary....

Posted Saturday, October 14, 2006 2:45:34 PM by Blog57 Team
Top United Nations judges from UN Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) have expressed concern over the reluctance of some UN member states for having various suspects of the 1994 Rwanda Genocide apprehended. In a meeting held shortly after ICTR President, Judge Eric Mose addressed the UN General Assembly in New York on Monday; the jurists urged member states to bring to book suspects like Felicien Kabuga (pictured) and others that are still at large. Kabuga and seventeen others are wanted by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, to answer charges of genocide against them. The Tribunal, based in Tanzanian northern town of Arusha, faces a strict December 2008 deadline. Kabuga, who is believed to be hiding in Kenya, is accused of sponsoring the killings, which claimed an estimated one million ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus....

The judges will work in provincial courts and will develop an activity that, according to Caetano de Sousa, "is not easy" that is why he told them to dedicate attention to the constant changes in the country's laws, as working tools. ....

Group Polls Johnson County Judges on Hot Button Issues
Posted Tuesday, September 19, 2006 6:45:58 AM by Blog57 Team
A conservative political action committee has sent Johnson County judges a questionnaire about their beliefs on such controversial issues as abortion and school funding. The Kansas Judicial Review of Johnson County will use the answers to recommend to voters which judges should be retained. Tim Golba of Olathe is chairman of the committee. He says voters have a right to know more about how judges feel on controversial issues. However, many judges say they don't answer questionnaires from special-interest groups because their job is to enforce existing laws, not to advocate for what laws should be. For example, District Judge Steve Leben says he thinks that judges should broadly discuss their views -- but not try to answer narrow inquires like the ones in the questionnaire....

Audience annoyed at muted judges

There was disquiet after the results as many people felt they deserved a better explanation from the judges this year about how they reached their decision. Members of the audience, players and conductors came up to 4BR after the conclusion of the 154th British Open to register their disappointment that the judges hadn't given a fuller explanation from the stage for the reasons behind their results. One irate supporter told 4BR: "Why is it that the organizers expect me to buy my ticket, and then pay for an expensive programme and short score only for the judges not to have the good grace to give at least some explanation about the test piece and what they were looking for?" Patronising ....
