| | | Google Trademark Vs Blogger | | Posted Saturday, November 11, 2006 12:46:17 PM by Blog57 Team | | Google cut off Ionut Alex. Chitu's only current option of making money from his blog, Google Operating System, by disabling his AdSense. Apparently what Google's getting at is that readers may confuse this with an official Google blog... since the word "google" is contained in the URL (googlesystem.blogspot.com). Ionut even offered Google to emphasize that his blog is unofficial, e.g. to include a "this blog is not affiliated with Google" at the end of every post, to no avail so far. Google tells him, "You're welcome to continue showing ads on other sites that comply with our policies." Update: Good news for Ionut, thanks to some Googlers who helped review the situation! He received the following message: I received your email from Scott.... | |

| | | Putin Says He'll Retain Influence In Russia After Term Ends in '08 | | Posted Friday, November 03, 2006 2:46:15 PM by Blog57 Team | | MOSCOW, Oct. 25 -- With his trademark indefatigability and command of detail, President Vladimir Putin fielded questions from Russians for nearly three hours Wednesday in an annual televised session that has become a ritual of presidential stagecraft here. Putin, who has sworn off amending the constitution to allow himself a third term, reiterated his determination to step down in 2008 but said he would continue to influence the country's direction. .... | |

| | | Spam maker loses spam trademark | | Posted Tuesday, October 17, 2006 2:45:32 PM by Blog57 Team | | The maker of canned meat product Spam has lost a European trademark case that would have given it rights over the word spam when it relates to email-related products. Hormel Foods owns the trademark for 'SPAM' (spiced ham). However it recently attempted to register Spam as a trademark to prevent other companies using the word in their anti-spam product names. However, the European Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (OHIM) rejected the application because Hormel Foods is not connected to the email business. It added that "for the consumers the meaning of spam will certainly be unsolicited, usually commercial email, rather than a designation for canned spicy ham", the Associated Press reports. Hormel Foods thinks it is acceptable to refer to unsolicited commercial email as spam, as long as the first letter remains lower-case.... | |

| | | NFL roundup: Bears maul Bills | | Posted Monday, October 09, 2006 6:45:44 AM by Blog57 Team | | The Chicago Bears ruined Dick Jauron's homecoming with their trademark fierce defence and the kind of offensive firepower he never saw during his five years as their head coach. Rex Grossman threw two touchdown passes, Cedric Benson scored his first two NFL touchdowns and the Bears forced five turnovers Sunday in a 40-7 drubbing of Jauron's Buffalo Bills at Soldier Field that moved Chicago to 5-0 for the first time since 1986. "I think these guys are one of the best teams in the NFL right now," said the Bills' Willis McGahee, the NFL's leading rusher with 389 yards. "We're going to have a challenge in front of us. We fought through last week and hopefully we can fight through this week." Chicago kicker Robbie Gould booted four field goals to improve to 17-for-17 for the season as the Bears — the NFC's only unbeaten team — ran their scoring margin to an eye-opening 156 points scored and 36 allowed.... | |

| | | Castro's trademark | | Posted Monday, September 04, 2006 12:45:33 AM by Blog57 Team | | It's always nice to see people rallying around the sick (or dead). Take the way U.S. business interests are seeking to bolster the flagging spirits of ailing (or defunct) Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. They aren't quite putting up the lickspittle performance of that chip-off-the-old-Eastern-Bloc Sacha Trudeau, but they are tut-tutting liquor giant Bacardi (which is owned by a family of Cuban exiles) for continuing to challenge Cuba over trademark issues. Doesn't Bacardi realize that if it questions the old tyrant's revolutionary seizure of assets and brands, then he might threaten the trademarks of all those American companies who have registered their names on the island gulag? Not only might he start selling Commie-produced Heinz Ketchup and Levi's jeans at home, he might start flooding the globe with high-quality Cuban knock-offs of Nike or Pepsi! .... | |
