There are more developments from the Farmers Branch City Council on its controversial anti-illegal immigration law. The city council will vote on a revised ordinance Monday. It still requires renters to know the citizenship status of the people they rent to, but it has a newly-added provision. It now makes exemptions for minors and seniors older than 61. This ordinance will go before voters May 12. ....

Arizona's four immigration propositions are passing, so far claiming more than 70 percent of the vote with 70 percent of polls reporting. Proposition 103, one of the more controversial measures on the ballot, seeks to make English the state's official language. It calls for all government action to be conducted in English, although there are numerous exemptions, such as legal proceedings. Bilingual ballots would not be affected because of federal law. Proponents of the measure said it was an important symbolic move, designed to show the value of the English language in the state. Opponents called the measure unnecessary considering governmental business is already conducted in English. With the numerous exemptions, there would be few practical effects, opponents said....

Local immigration plan on fast track with feds

Two months after sending in its request to take part in a federal program that would allow it to essentially act as its own immigration enforcement agency, the Davidson County Sheriff's Office was given assurance last week that it is on the “fast track" to becoming the latest local law enforcement agency to be accepted into the federal Delegation of Authority program. An approximate timeline for full implementation was unavailable, but Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall reiterated that his office is in regular contact with federal officials and has repeatedly been told that there have been no holdups. Hall had originally hoped to have the program – also referred to as 287 (g), for the section of the Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1996 that authorizes it – up and running by early next year....

A second lawsuit has been filed against Riverside, a township both lauded and condemned for passing an ordinance last summer that bans the hiring and housing of illegal immigrants. The suit, filed yesterday in Superior Court in Burlington County by the Puerto Rican Defense and Education Fund, contends the law is a violation of civil rights and puts businesses at risk. It also contends that the township does not have the legal authority to "ban a class of housing occupants or regulate the hiring practices of a business based upon immigration status." Named as plaintiffs along with the defense fund are several local businesses and landlords, and a Latino resident listed as "John Doe 1," who might face eviction because of the ordinance. According to the suit, the resident received a letter from his landlord asking for his immigration status....

From 1998 until 2006, W.G. Van Dorian worked as an attorney in Criminal Law and Immigration Law in The Netherlands and Aruba. As such, Van Dorian came into close contact with terrorism and religious extremism. After the recent murders of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh and Dutch politician Pim Fortuyn (supposedly the next president), Van Dorian decided The Netherlands was no longer a safe haven to write anything that is critical towards extremism. He emigrated from The Netherlands to South America to publish his novel without having to fear repercussions from extremists. Part One of a series titled The New World Order, the fictional thriller, The Invisible Invasion, describes a possible escalation in the world of (nuclear) conflict in the future with very realistic roots of religious extremism in present day Europe....

Immigration law to be tweaked

Amendments will be made to Greeces immigration law, which the government introduced just over a year ago, in an effort to simplify the process for migrants looking to obtain residence permits, Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos said yesterday. When the law was passed, I said that along the way we would make partial changes which help to avoid bureaucracy or increase the number of illegal immigrants whose stay in Greece we legalize, said Pavlopoulos after an Inner Cabinet meeting. Among the changes the government plans to introduce are that children under the age of 18 will no longer need to pay a fee, known as paravolo, when they submit their residence papers. The method of counting Social Security Foundation (IKA) credits will also change so officials will take into account credits that have been earned over a two-year period to asses whether a migrant fulfills social security criteria....

SAN DIEGO -- Standing in front of a warehouse where a tunnel running under the border was discovered in January, a group of Republican congressmen announced Wednesday tough new border security measures signed into law by President Bush. The $21.3 billion Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act, signed Wednesday by the president, includes money to hire 1,500 additional U.S. Border Patrol agents, build more border fencing and add 6,700 detention beds. The act also makes it a crime to dig tunnels under the nation's borders. "Today's bill signing is an important step (to) have a more secure southern border," said Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Wisc. ....

States, Counties Begin to Enforce Immigration Law

CHARLOTTE -- Police here operated for years under what amounts to a "don't ask, don't tell" policy toward illegal immigrants. As elsewhere in the United States, law enforcement officers did not check the immigration status of people they came into contact with, and in the vast majority of cases, a run-in with the law carried little threat of deportation. ....

Bush presses for 'rational' immigration legislation

WHITE HOUSE President Bush is all but admitting that an immigration law overhaul is dead for now on Capitol Hill. The president says he can't speak to a timetable for action, but says he's hopeful Congress will find a "rational way forward." At a White House news conference, the president says an end to "catch and release" policies for illegal immigrants has made U-S borders more secure. But he says in the long run, America needs a "rational work plan" and must "treat people with dignity." The president acknowledges it's "virtually impossible to find eleven (m) million folks" who are in the U-S illegally. But he also says "granting automatic citizenship" would be unwise. HAZLETON, Pa. — The City Council gave tentative approval Friday to an overhaul of an anti-illegal-immigration law considered to be one of the nation's toughest, hoping to put the measure on sounder legal footing. Like the version it will replace if granted final approval Tuesday, the new ordinance punishes businesses that employ illegal immigrants and landlords who rent to them. ....
