SCHOHARIE _ Former Town of Esperance Justice Charles P. Myles, convicted of stealing electricity by tampering with a meter, was sentenced in Schoharie County Court on Wednesday. He received five years of probation and was ordered to do community service, make restitution and pay a fine. "The disgrace Mr. Myles brought upon himself and the judicial system is profound," said Special Prosecutor Michael Breen, who asked the judge to impose a one-year term in the county jail. Judge George Bartlett said he agreed Myles’ actions were disgraceful. "It’s sad for a judge to admit a fellow judge would do something like this," he said. However, citing the 65-year-old Myles’ age and his lack of a serious criminal background, Bartlett chose to sentence him to probation....

Sony said Tuesday that the U.S. Department of Justice is probing its electronics unit as part of an industry-wide investigation into sales of a type of memory chip. The news could spell more trouble for a company already stung by sinking profits, a global battery recall and product delays. The Japanese company received a subpoena from the Justice Department's antitrust division seeking information about Sony's static random access memory, or SRAM, business, company spokesman Atsuo Omagari said. "Sony intends to cooperate fully with the DOJ in what appears to be an industry-wide inquiry," the company said in a short statement. Sony has been battered by a worldwide recall of lithium-ion batteries on fears they could overheat and burst into flames. The recall affected almost every major laptop maker in the world, including Dell Inc., Apple Computer Inc....

Liberia: Justice Needs More Attention

THE LAST COMMENT we made regarding respect for the rule of law by ordinary Liberians and functionaries of government was prompted by the believed refusal of the government to settle its indebtedness to Morweh Liberia Ltd even though a chamber justice of the Supreme Court of Liberia helped the parties reach payment agreement. At the time, we indicated that unless judicial opinions were respected and abided by all, the nation runs the risk of not only losing the chance to reform the judiciary, but it also poises to slide back to the dark days of overbearing executive and desperate, disgruntled people. Shortly after that comment and when we thought the admonition would go down well especially at this time of national reform, we got a backlash: the leadership of the Judiciary accused us of wishful thinking and in the same breath, vowed to uphold the sanctity of the Judiciary....
